Chapter Fourteen

"We might have to start up again later," Adell rubbed her tired eyes.

"I agree," Jeri shook out her shoulders, "This just isn't working. There's not enough energy to grasp. I think their moving around on the earth, not by helicopter."

"Your right," Lidia nodded touching her amethyst. "It's an old Winnebago—bulky, early 70's. He's some distance from his helicopter."

"He's had Rebecca for a month," Adell added. "He thinks she is the one. He stole her from an Amish community."

"If he's happy with her—it might buy us all some time." Jeri hoped.

"Not much though," Lidia's eyes narrowed. "He's fussy and impulsive."

Adell and Lidia had been trying for days to pick up on new information about the killer's most recent victim—Rebecca. Adell had received a snap shot of what the girl looked like early that morning. She called Jeri to come over, maybe in link, they could find her.

Adell saw a tearful young girl with dirty, long, blond hair and blue eyes. She was small for her age. She was wearing a bulky, blue patterned dress. Her feet were bare. She had bruising on her arms and legs.

"I'm sorry," Jeri shook her head, "It's just not enough. There are millions of little girls who look like her."

"Have you been able to find the flying lizard?" Lidia asked doubtfully.

"Lots of them," Jeri said grimly, "maybe even his, but none with little girls on board. Can you get an impression on what the man looks like? Is he flying or driving?"

"He splinters," Lidia shook her head.

"Is that normal?" Jeri asked doubtfully.

"It happens," Adell answered. "We aren't capable of understanding something, so the image splinters or fogs. Sometimes it's because it's a new concept to us—sometimes it's just too horrific for us to deal with."

"I'm done," Lidia admitted, "I'm getting a very loud headache. I can't think anymore."

"It's time to stop," Jeri sighed with disappointment.

They looked at each other feeling discouraged. They had really tried, but there just wasn't enough. No one wanted to mention that it would have been different if Natilie had been in the circle. They were beginning to realize that Natilie had sight, but also enough intuitive to know where to look. They had not really thought about it before. Natilie had always been good at finding things—and it was a big world out there.

"If we don't find something soon," Jeri said chagrinned. "Natilie will start looking."

"She'll find it, too," Adell's face turned white, "find this killer."

"Would any of us do any differently?" Lidia mentioned as she stirred her cup of coffee. "You know we wouldn't—look at us now."

It was true. Jeri hadn't slept in more than thirty hours. Lidia was nursing one of the ugliest headaches she could remember, and Adell was layered up in blankets fighting off the flu. But here they were, trying desperately to save this child.

"Can you get enough of the child to place a protection spell on her?" Jeri asked. "We may still be able to protect her—somewhat."

"Not unless the child pushes her own energy outward," Adell sighed.
